Article: How to apply sunscreen

Spending time in the sun will inevitably expose you to some UV rays but there is plenty you can do to reduce the risk that they pose.

Firstly, you should ensure that you apply your sunscreen correctly.  If you are using Green People organic sunscreen, you should put it on 30 minutes before you go out in the sun. This allows it to sink in and take effect.

How much sunscreen to apply?

Most people don’t apply enough sun lotion and therefore get less sun protection than they think they are. To get the level of sun protection advertised on the bottle, you should be applying 2mg/cm2 to all exposed skin.

Now we understand that that is very difficult to put into practice and fortunately there is a much easier way to judge how much sunscreen to use.  One handful should equal enough for your whole body.  Just cup one hand and pour sunscreen into it until full.

The benefit of using this technique is that it adjusts for each person’s size so if measuring sunscreen for a child, you should use their cupped palm instead of yours.

You should reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours when out in the sun, even if you are not getting burnt, in order to renew your protection.  Also reapply directly after swimming.
