Many people choose high factor sun lotions, such as SPF50, because they think that they are getting much more protection than lower ones like SPF25.

Indeed, it would be easy to assume that a sunscreen with SPF50 offers twice as much protection as an SPF25 sun lotion.  However, this is most certainly not the case.

SPF25 sun lotion blocks around 96% of incoming UVB rays, whilst SPF50 blocks 98% - a difference of just 2 percentage points.

Talking about this topic, a spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists said: “Actually, the difference between SPF30 and SPF100 is marginal.”
