Article: What is the shelf life of your natural sunscreens?
In general our organic skin care products have a three year shelf life. Our natural sunscreens have a similar life-span as regards freshness of their base but the effectiveness of their sun protection reduces with age.
The amount of reduction is dependant upon the way they have been stored. As a guide they lose 5-10% of their effectiveness each year. However, we recently had one of our natural sunscreens tested after 3 years and it was found to have retained all of its effectiveness. This product had been stored in optimal, cool, low light conditions.
If your sun lotion is left laying in sunshine or stored in particularly warm conditions then it should be replaced each year.
It is actually possible to find the manufacture date of our natural sun lotions, since that is what the Batch Number is made up of. If you look at the crinkled join at the top of the tube you will notice some numbers embossed into it. The date of manufacture is in the form mm/y/dd.
For example, if your sunscreen has 05924 written on the crimped edge, this would mean that it was made on the 24th May 2009.
