In order to protect against both UVB and UVA light, natural sun lotions have to use two different filters.

The ones that Green People use are a UVB filter made from an extract of the leaves of the cinnamon tree, and a UVA filter which is Titanium dioxide. Whilst it would be possible for us to produce a natural sun lotion offering greater UVB protection simply by increasing the proportion of cinnamon extract it contains, this would not increase the level of UVA protection.

To gain more UVA protection we could increase the amount of Titanium dioxide we use in our organic sunscreens. Unfortunately, this would have the effect of making the cream or lotion so thick and opaque that it would sit as a white layer on the surface of the skin.

The natural UVA filter we use lasts for a minimum of 2 hours up to a maximum of 4 hours depending on the amount of sun exposure. This is why we always advise people to reapply sun lotions every 2 hours whilst out in the sun, and also to apply at least 20 minutes before exposing the skin to the sun - this gives the filters time to become active on the skin.

We therefore cannot make a natural sun lotion which offers enough protection to have a very high SPF rating, as it would need to last all day.
